Developing Your Passion Project
Two students apply to the same top university, both with perfect grades and strong recommendations. But one of them has something extra: a project they started from scratch, proving their passion, initiative, and curiosity. Who gets the offer?
The only way to stand out in today’s competitive market is a passion project, which could well be the difference between a good application and one that secures an offer from the Ivy League, Oxbridge, and other top universities across the US, UK and EU.

What is a passion project?
A passion project is a meaningful project, often longer-term, that showcases your academic interests beyond the standard curriculum at school.
There’s many different kinds of passion projects, and there’s no set framework for what one should look like. In fact, the more creative and out-of-the-box, the better!
It could be writing a research paper, launching a blog, creating an app, or leading a community initiative (more on examples below). The important thing to remember is that it should prove your academic prowess, commitment, and genuine curiosity for your subject – two things admissions officers prioritise when extending offers.
Always a plus is if your project has an impact on your community in any way. Both US and UK admissions teams are interested in seeing a commitment to progress in their applicants.
Why do passion projects matter for university applications?
At the essay writing stage (and interview stage, if applicable) of applying to top universities in the US and UK, you’ll have to discuss your passion for your subject.
The best way to give concrete action behind just words is to undertake a passion project: prove that you’re curious about your subject and have enough drive and commitment that you have a passion project on the side.
The right passion project displays, among other things:
Passion (obviously)
Curiosity
Impact
Creativity
Academic prowess
Commitment and drive
Initiative

What kinds of passion projects should I do?
Although passion projects can take lots of different forms, and non-academic projects can still have their benefits, it’s best to align your project with your general subject area.
Here’s a few ideas based on the general fields of study at most universities, although we help refine your choice by taking into account your specific subject, personal skills and interests:
STEM Applicants: Developing a coding app, conducting independent research, or launching a science blog.
Humanities Applicants: Starting a social media page on a niche subject (Shakespeare, witchcraft, philosophical thought – whatever takes your fancy in your subject), recording a history podcast, writing a research paper, or running a literary magazine.
Medicine Applicants: Volunteering in a healthcare initiative or your local hospital, creating a public health awareness campaign, starting a social media page sharing health tips or facts, or shadowing professionals and writing about the experience.
Business Applicants: Launching a small-scale startup, running a financial literacy workshop online, or competing in case competitions.
Blogs, Instagram accounts, local competitions, starting podcasts or writing research papers are all valid forms of passion projects. The key is to align them closely to your specific skills.
