Think Smarter for STEP Success
Ace the Sixth Term Examination Papers with our expert admissions test tutors
If you’re applying for a Mathematics course in the UK, you could be required to sit the Sixth Term Examination Paper (STEP). A much harder, longer, and more abstract test than what you’d be used to in school-level maths, the STEP is seen as a challenging test.
It might well be challenging, but with our team of expert STEP tutors, it doesn’t have to be stressful. With our personalized learning plans and realistic test simulations, you can take the stress out of your preparation and secure your spot at your dream school.

Which UK Universities require the STEP?
The University of Cambridge requires the STEP as part of your application, although other universities may ask applicants to take it as part of their acceptance offer. These include:
University of Warwick
Imperial College London
King’s College London
UCL (University College London)
University of Bath
University of Lancaster
University of Bristol
University of Southampton
The STEP is different from other admissions tests. It’s taken much later in the year, after the UCAS application in October (for Cambridge) or January (for other UK universities). You will be informed by your chosen universities whether you need to take the STEP as additional proof once they extend you an offer.
Entry requirements can change; always double-check your course website.
What is the STEP like?
Each STEP exam is three hours long, and the questions are much longer and more difficult than what you might be used to. At school, students answer about a dozen questions in two hours, while in the STEP, you answer only six questions in three hours.
There are two STEP examinations: STEP 2 and STEP 3. There used to be a STEP 1, but it was removed a few years ago. Students take either one or two exams, depending on university requirements.
STEP 2 is based on A-Level Mathematics and AS-Level Further Mathematics.
STEP 3 is based on A-Level Mathematics and A-Level Further Mathematics.
The paper has 12 questions across three sections:
Section A: 8 pure mathematics questions
Section B: 2 mechanics questions
Section C: 2 probability/statistics questions
Over 6,000 students sit the STEP annually
Less than 20% of STEP candidates achieve a Grade 1 or higher
Achieving a score in the top 10% is critical for securing an offer from the most competitive universities
Don’t miss these pesky STEP deadlines!
You take the STEP after submitting your UCAS application, usually in June after your school’s examination period.
1 March – STEP entries open
4 May – STEP registration closes
5 June – STEP Paper 2
24 June – STEP Paper 3
15 August – STEP results published
Results are usually used alongside your A-Level or IB exam results as part of your offer conditions.
*Dates vary slightly by year.
